4800 Series™ Cruising Sails

North's 4800 Series™ Cruising Mainsails and Genoas are designed to deliver exceptional  performance, durability and quality at a surprisingly affordable price for boats 40 feet and under.

4800 Series mainsails and genoas are made using North's own NorDac™ 4800 sailcloth, produced using 100% Dacron. NorDac 4800 features an extremely tight weave for improved stability and shape holding.

4800 Series cruising sails feature a crosscut panel layout that aligns stronger fill oriented threads in the cloth with aerodynamic loads in the sail.

SAIL CLOTH:

North Cruising mainsails and genoas are constructed using tightly woven, high performance polyester fabric North's own NorDac 4800™(left.) Available in weights from 4.0 oz. to 9.0 oz., the tightly packed weave helps improve shape-holding and reduce stretch, delivering durability and performance you'd expect from North at a price that is surprisingly affordable. Quality polyester fabrics are naturally fill-oriented, meaning the strong threads run across a bolt of cloth, or in the fill direction. Since the loads in a sail run vertically, NorDac 4800 sails are crosscut to align the strong fill threads with the aerodynamic loads in the sail, reducing stretch.

PERFORMANCE EXTRAS:

Full-Length Battens
North Cruising mainsails can be equipped with full length battens. Full-length battens improve the durability of your mainsail, make it easier to handle, and keep the sail quieter by inhibiting luffing.

UV Protection
For a longer lasting sail, you should install some type of UV cover on the leech and foot of your roller furling genoa to prevent premature UV degradation on your furled sail -- U.V. is terminal in the tropics.

North Full-Batten mainsails (left) improve sail life and reduce noise by inhibiting luffing

Reefing Controls:
For improved performance of roller furling genoas in moderate to heavy air, North offers Foam Luff™ and RopeLuff™  which flatten the middle of the genoa as you furl, reducing heeling and making your boat easier to steer as the wind increases. Foam Luff is offset from the luff tape, allowing headstay rotation to begin before the foam is brought into the roll, thereby reducing the force required to turn the headstay. RopeLuff uses staggered lengths of polypropylene line contained within a sock sewn onto the luff of the sail. Your North representative can help you decide which system is most appropriate for your boat and sailing.
