Solutions for Cruising Sailors

Question:
What is the very best solution to restoring the as-new look to Dacron sails by washing them with some solution? To remove a mixture of mould stains, vehicle emissions condensate from diesel engines (trains adjacent to marina) and general atmospheric gunge? I am a sucker for detergent ads on tv under these circumstances, but my skipper tells me that in practice, there is no magic as demonstrated for the gullible tv audinece. What magic liquids does North recommend when washing Dacron sails for clients? Any suggestions gratefully received!

Answer: Hi Martin, Dacron sails can be cleaned with materials that you probably already have in your garage. Mold and atmospheric grunge can be cleaned with a solution of bleach and water, mixed at a ratio of 1:30. Wash the sail with a sponge and use a soft brush for the tougher areas. When you are done, rinse the sail thoroughly with cold water. If you have any really soiled or oil or grease stains try a common laundry stain remover like Shout or Spray N' Wash. You can also use a rag soaked in Acetone for local stains.
