Solutions for Cruising Sailors

Question:
I have just been given a Columbia MKII 26 foot sailboat. It has just been sitting for the last two to three years. The previous owner was sick for this time. My question is this. Both the main and the jib are dirty. Is there a safe way to clean these sails? Thanks for your help in this matter.

Answer: Dear Thomas,

We recommend using warm water and soap with a soft brush. You can also try household cleaners, including those that are citrus-based, for dirt and light oil stains.

If your sail has any mold or mildew, try soap and water first or on tougher areas, try a mixture of bleach and water with a soft bristle brush or mild scrubbing pad. You can also try using common household stain removers like "Shout" or "Spray n' Wash."

With any sail cleaning treatment, rinse the sail a couple of times with fresh water after cleaning.

Good luck,
Veronica Brown
