Question:
I have a newly purchased older Columbia 8.7 with new North Sail main. I would like a diagram of the sail reefed and rigged.

Thanks,
Kathy

Answer: Hi Kathy,

There are a number of arrangements used for securing the reefed tack. The one you use will depend on the hardware on your mast and boom. If you let Veronica know where you sail she can put you in touch with the closest North Sails rep and in a brief phone call it will be easy to determine how your boat is set up. At the clew end, almost all boats are set up for a reefing line that exits the boom through a sheave behind the mainsail. The line should be passed through the reef clew grommet on your sail and then brought down to the boom directly below the grommet. The end of the reef line is then passed around the boom and tied to itself with a "bowline on a bight" knot. This arrangement allows the end of the line to float along the boom within a short range. If your mainsail is made with a boltrope on the foot, there should be a reinforced slot in the foot of the sail, just above the boom, in line with the reef clew. This slot allows you to pass the reef line all the way around the boom.
