Question:
Hi. I had a question about rigging. My husband and I just bought a 1981 Hunter 27. We have raced for years and so spinnakers are very important to us. Even though we do not plan on racing this boat, we would like to add a spinnaker. Right now there is no rigging to be able to add a spinnaker to the boat. I wondered if you could give me a list of what I would need to add a spinnaker and also how to do it.

Thank you.

Answer: Rebekah,

Items you will need to get your Hunter 27 ready to fly a spinnaker are:

One set of Spinnaker sheets. 5/16" dacron will work fine.

Two small blocks to pass the spinaker sheeets through. Harken 023 single swivel block will work nicely. These need to be mounted as far aft on the outboard toe rail of the boat.

One spinnaker pole. If you do not have a pole and an attachment on your mast for a pole I would suggest using an asymmetric spinnaker that you can tack to the bow of the boat and does not require a spinnaker pole.

The best cruising spinnaker solution would be an asymmetric model. These are the easiest to fly short handed as they do not require a pole. You can easily gybe the sail without having to move a pole from one side of the boat to the other.

Hope these suggestions help out!
