Solutions for Cruising Sailors

Question:
How do I keep lazy jacks from interfering with the main sail when lowering or raising the sail? I have a conventional lazy jack set-up with lines attached to the boom and mast. The lines on each side of the boom are separated by about 10 to 12 inches. When I raise or lower the main, the battens get hung up on the lazy jacks lines. Is there some way to separate the lines to create more room for the sail?

Thanks,
Marty

Answer: Hi Marty,

Some boats have bars on the sides of the boom that hold the lazy jacks farther apart. Larger boats are sometimes equipped with booms that flare out to a very wide surface on the top (commonly referred to as a "Park Avenue Boom".) But the vast majority of boat owners just use patience and learn to hold the halyard until the battens are lined up between the lazy jacks, and then quickly hoist the sail. Make sure that your mainsheet is completely slack so that the boom can point directly into the wind.
