Question: I
am interested in the response you gave to Steve
& Ruth Anderson (June 13, 2004) regarding recutting a mainsail
to reduce the overall dimensions. I have a 1983 S 2 7.3 that I Club Race
on an inland lake near Houston. My current main is the original 20 year
old mainsail by North Sails with P of 24.79', E of 8.17', and Leech of
25.46'. A very close fit in a used main is a J 22, which I can pick up
in very usable conditon from either an online or a local source. However,
most of the used North J 22 sails need about 12" to 14" off
the luff and 6" off the foot to fit my rig. Using the method you
described, can the bolt rope be spliced, or must it be completely replaced
requiring restitching all along the luff & foot?
Thanks,
Lou Von Wonglom
Answer:
Hi Ron, If you are going to recut the sail by
taking fabric out of the middle, the first step would be to remove the
boltrope. Removing the boltrope is easy. There is typically one row of
sewing and then a row of 1/2" seamstick adhesive. The bolt rope can
be removed in about 10 minutes and then reinstalled without any modifications
when the recut is done.
