Solutions for Cruising Sailors

Question:
I have a new North main sail that I inherited that is too big for my boat (the foot of the sail is two-feet too long). Can I cut the sail down to fit my boat? The luff length is perfect. It also has battens that extend to the leach.

Answer: Hi, A good sailmaker can probably make the bigger sail work on your rig. The best way to effect the recut will probably be to cut the sail in horizontally just above the highest reef set, and the two feet out of the middle of the lower section vertically. Then the two halves would go back together and the edges will have to be refaired. The question of whether or not it is worth spending the money for the recut will depend on the condition of the sail. Your best bet will be to bring the sail, and measurements of your rig, to a nearby sail loft and get the senior sailmaker to take a look at it with you.
