Question: I am considering a code 0 or a code 1 for fast cruising/local racing. Surface code 1 84,5 m². I : 18460 mm; J : 5200 mm cloth NL 4.5.

We will be fixing a removable carbon bowsprit and alter the masthead with an extra plate in titanium.

Can you tll me the maximum forces on the bow and mast ?

Many thanks and a Merry Christmas.

Answer: Hi John,

This information is really just a guess based on the small amount of information that you provided. At 14 knots App wind speed, 75 degrees App wind angle, the halyard will see loads of about 1,000kg and the tack load will vary between about 400kg and 1000 kg, depending on how much the sheet is eased. There are many factors that can change the loads, including the boats displacement, righting moment, the sea state, the sail depth and sail twist. So please don't use this information for any insurance claim or boat modification purposes. I suggest that you consult with a rig engineer before making any decisions.
