Solutions for Cruising Sailors

Question:
Hi! We have a older boat, ('66, 30' Pearson Coaster) that needs new sails. We'd also like to make it easier to sail, we're old too. We'd like to do every thing from the cockpit if possible. Where do we start?

Thank you,
Richard Lang

Answer: Hi Richard, I think the best place for you to start is with a local rigger or an experienced boat shop. You should get the deck hardware in place first, and then the sail designs next. If you are starting with a stock Coaster, you will want to add a headsail furler, mainsail halyard and reef lines lead back to the coachroof and a simple lazy jack system.

I sailed on a friend's Pearson Wanderer in RI last summer. Those are great old boats. If you are in the RI area I can steer you to a couple of shops that will give you good advice.
