Question: I would like to
know what Dacron sailcloth weight you would recommend for a big mainsail
like a Nonsuch 33. It is a low aspect ratio sail, does that mean it should be a balanced
weave (same density of warp and fill yarns)?
Finally, for good windward performance and sail shape retention, would
you recommend longer flexible battens?
I look forward to your kind reply.
I believe I have the only Nonsuch 33 in the UK, and she deserves looking
after.
Kindest regards,
Iain Finden
Answer:
Dear Iain,
Thank you for your email regarding a mainsail for your Nonsuch 33.
The most suitable fabric to build your new mainsail from would be North
Sails Premium low aspect dacron. This fabric has been specially manufactured
to provide a balanced construction suitable for rigs with aspect ratios
of 2.5:1 or less, your rig has an aspect ratio of under 2:1. We would use
fabric weight 8.5L, this fabric is 8.9oz smsy with a warp x fill count
of 300 x 570.
I would also recommend longer tapered battens than your current sail to
help give more support to the leech and improve sail shape retention .
Please feel free to give me a call if
you have any questions.
Kind regards,
