Question: I have a 1977 28-foot
Pearson. I would like to mount a fairlead for the main halyard and a rope
clutch and winch on the cabin so I can handle the lines from the cockpit.
Additionally I would like to have my sail modified for the Dutchman flaking
system. My question are:
- Do you modify sails for the Dutchman system?
- Can the cabin, with the appropriate backing plates, take the strain?
If you don't know, who would?
- Can I use the winch from the mast or should I buy a new one?
- Should I just say the hell with it an buy a new boat?
Thanks

Answer: Hello Bill,
Thanks for your email. Yes, we can easily modify your current mainsail
with a Dutchman System in our Huntington Long Island loft. You can speed
up the process by measuring the distance from the shrouds to the center
of the mast. This will help us determine the placement of the Dutchman
lines.
Pearsons are well built yachts so the cabin top (with backing plates)
will be able to take the load of a new winch and rope clutch. Just try
to separate the winch and clutch by at least 18 inches.
If I am reading into your email correctly, it seems that you are trying
to simplify the task of raising and lowering your mainsail. Your existing
mast mounted winch may work if you move it but a new modern winch with
a good self tailer will make this task much easier for you to accomplish.
I hope this helps with your decision. You can always call the Hunting
loft 631 421 7245, Chris
Buncke is the service manager here and can answer any questions that
you may have.
