Solutions for Cruising Sailors

Question:
I have a Pearson 365 ketch. How may square feet should a storm sail be for the best performance in heavy weather?

Thanks,
Tom Schulz

Answer: Hi Tom,

The ORC recommended storm sail sizes are:

Storm jib = Height of foretriangle (I) squared *.05
Storm trysail = .175* P*E

These formulas will give you areas that should be considered Maximum size for storm sails. Typically we design storm sails for cruising boats about 20% smaller.
