Solutions for Cruising Sailors

Question:
I have a furled 150 genoa with a foam luff from your company. While
the canvas itself is in very good shape, the UV cover is in very poor condition. Is
the UV cover material sacrificial? Can it be replaced? Is it worth the expense?

I read the Q&A supporting the use of citrus-based cleaners, What about
Oxyclean? I talked to someone that had good luck but, they had no idea if it
would do any damage.

Answer: Hi Richard, Yes, the UV cover is sacrificial and it can be replaced. You should bring your sail into the sail loft nearest you and the staff can give you a reasonable estimate of how much life is left in the sail itself. Along with a cost estimate for replacing the existing cover, you will be able to determine if the
expense is justified.

We have never tested Oxyclean. The Oxyclean MSDS states that it is a
Chlorinated Detergent Cleaner with 10-30% Potasium Hydroxide content. Chlorine
can not be used on any nylon or aramid fiber materials. It might be okay to use it
on Dacron but you should definitely test it on a small sample area first.
