J/105 Class Development Program

Tom Coates Wins J/105 North Americans!

Tom Coates and five of his core crewmembers onboard his J/105 Masquerade won their second straight J/105 North American Championship title, which was hosted by the Annapolis Yacht Club from November 1-4, 2007. Although Coates and his team have been dominating J/105 regattas throughout the year by showcasing their experience and speed on the race course, they weren't able to secure the trophy in the 36-boat fleet until the final race of the seven-race series.

Going into race seven, Masquerade trailed by five points, which meant they had to finish in the top five and the second place boat had to finish worse than eighth. "The wind was fluky and there was a huge pile-up at the bottom right gate on the final mark rounding, so we went to the left gate and ended up on the less-favored side of the course," said Coates, who owns a commercial real estate company in Northern California. "We were in 20th place at the mark rounding, but stayed on the right side (of the course) for the whole leg. We kept gaining and gaining and ended up crossing the line second and ultimately won since the boat that was in the lead finished twelfth."

Coates had only been sailing for six months before he bought his first J/105 in 1995. In fact, he named the boat Charade to imply his minimal sailing experience. "I originally bought the boat to sail around San Francisco Bay for fun, but some friends and other (St. Francis Yacht Club) members wanted to race with me and to be honest, I had no idea what I was doing," admits Coates. He enjoyed racing the J/105 so much that four years later, he bought a second J/105 to keep on the East Coast to race at regattas like Key West Race Week and the NYYC Regatta in Newport.

Coates races with North upwind sails and bought a new North AP Mainsail and North 3DL® AP Jib for the North American Championship. "We were absolutely thrilled with our new sails and look forward to using them in January in Key West," said Coates. "The shape and performance were great, I was very impressed (with them)."

"Tom and his team work very hard and earned the North American title the hard way this year," said Seadon Wijsen of North's San Francisco Bay-area loft. "Over the past twelve years, I have witnessed Tom fine-tune his sailing skills, which have made him one of the best J/105 sailors in the country. I really enjoy working with him and I hope Team Masquerade continues their winning streak in Key West."

"Seadon has always taken good care of us and we get excellent service from North Sails," concluded Coates. "We buy new North sails at every available opportunity and I have always been very happy with them, but have never been happier than I am now."

Freedom Wins Sperry Top-Sider Annapolis NOOD!

Long time North client Pete Schellie won the 45 boat J/105 class at the Sperry Top-Sider Annapolis NOOD Regatta held April 27-29 on the Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis, MD. Pete and his crew aboard his J/105 FREEDOM had consistent finishes of 7,7, 3 to take the regatta over the next J/105 by four points. The conditions were very trying as no racing took place on Friday due to the light and fickle wind. Saturday wasn't much better with the fleet sitting around for a good part of the day waiting for the breeze to decide a direction and build to a sailable strength. The Race Committee managed to get one race off in unstable conditions. Sunday brought more promise as the front that plagued the East Coast finally moved off shore setting up a nice westerly flow and some much more suitable racing conditions. The two final races were held on Sunday. Read on...

After extensive testing over the last nine months, North Sails is proud to introduce our complete lineup of Aramid jibs. We are now offering three models, optimized for the major conditions that J/105 sailors race in throughout North America. Developed using the most advanced design software suite in the industry and manufactured using the world’s most advanced sailmaking technology, 3DL™, our lineup of jibs will help lead you to the top of your fleet. Choose your weapon!

Based on our AP design that powered the North American and Key West Race Week winners, the 3DL AP jib is the mainstay of our lineup. The choice for most fleets, the AP jib is the most versatile of our designs. Proven fast in both light and heavy air, the AP jib features a specialized vertical profile to allow for tight sheeting for exceptional pointing ability.

The 3DL HA Jib is an evolution of our San Francisco Bay design use by Good Timin’ to dominate Fleet 1 competition. Optimized for the heavy air conditions on the Bay, the draft forward, straight leech design of the HA jib is ideal for the more windy venues. For PHRF sailors, the HA jib is a perfect compliment to your overlapping genoa.

A New model to our lineup, the Wave Jib is optimized for lighter air areas with choppy water. Designed with a more powerful head section to allow for a more twisted set-up, the Wave Jib excelled in San Diego testing. If you commonly sail in “light & lumpy” conditions the Wave Jib is for you.

The North J/105 Class Development Program is stronger than ever. In fleets across North America, North Sails have enjoyed the most consistent success in the class. Through continual sail testing and tuning trials, we continue to move our J/105 program forward. Our latest sails and tuning guides have proven to be the most versatile and most user-friendly program on the water. Our customers know that if they use our tuning guide as a baseline that they will be as fast as anyone and can concentrate on race winning tactics.
