Question: Hi, I am the new owner for a J35 boat moored
in Hong Kong. I got a difter from the ex-owner which is about 100% and
materials look like 0.5oz spinnaker. Is it a standard size & area
for light wind condition (below 5 kn wind)? In Hong Kong, wind usually
dies in summer & near evening. So, a lighter & thinner genoa seems
more applicable for racing in HK. Is there any other choice/preference
based on your sails making experience. Please kindly advise.
Thanks!
Emily
Answer:
Emily,
Congratulations on your new boat. If the drifter
is indeed 0.5oz spinnaker cloth then it would be suitable for sailing
in very light air. The small (100%) size is easier to fill than a larger
sail. It is particularly useful to get the boat moving from a stop in
no wind.
As boat speed builds to perhaps 3 knots it would be time to change to
a light genoa or spinnaker, depending on the course. You might also be
able to use this sail to advantage as a staysail under a spinnaker on
a moderate air reach.
Good Luck,
