Solutions for Racing Sailors

Question:
I have a 1984 O'Day 30, used for club racing events on Long Island Sound. My upwind performance is poor; slow and she won't point - especially in light air.

Current sails are in relatively good shape for their age - 12+ years. I have a 143% Genoa (12 years old) and a 100% Jib (original!).

I'm looking into adding a new sail to my inventory. What do you recommend?

Answer: Dear Peter,

Thanks for your question. There are many factors in upwind performance. Twelve year old sails will certainly be one. A new mainsail would be the place to start. Since you use the main all the time, it has the biggest impact on overall performance. It also wears out most quickly. After that, your 12 year old genoa would be the next
factor in light air upwind performance. There are other factors as well: Over 12 years your boat has probably accumulated alot of extra stuff. For racing, take off all the gear you don't need. Bring only what you need for racing performance and safety. The most effective way to clear weight off the boat is to take off teh boat EVERYTHING that is not permanently attached and then put back only what you need.

Finally, a clean, smooth bottom is critical, especially in light air. Make sure the bottom is carefully prepared and receives a fresh coat of bottom paint, and then contract to have a diver clean your boat's bottom at least once every two weeks.
