Solutions for Racing Sailors

Submitted on September 2, 2007 by Thomas Marr-Laing

Question:
I own a San Juan 24 and am having fun racing her on a large prairie lake in central Alberta, Canada. I have just replaced the standing and running rigging. Could you provide me with information on how to best tune her rigging for racing and cruising purposes.

Also, last year I purchased your North U library of sailing books and CDs - a fantastic resource that I use frequently.

Thanks,

Answer: Dear Thomas,

Thank's for contacting us RE your San Juan 24. They're a great boat and ideal for lake sailing. Unfortunately we don't have a specific tuning guide for it. The sail plan I have shows the mast with 8" of aft rake (measured from the deck) so I would suggest you start with that. The North U "Trim" manual that I think you have has a good section on mast tuning so refer to that as well.

Good sailing and let me know if you have any other questions.

Sincerely,
Dave Miller
